my bestest friend!

I have been blogging for 18 months now and have never shared my blog with any family members or close friends. Fear of criticism was probably the main reason I stayed hidden. I accidentally mentioned my blog to my best friend while chatting on the phone a couple of weeks ago. When asked if I had one, I replied in the affirmative and gave her the link. Why did I step out of my comfort zone? I trust her opinions, not to mention the fact that we have been friends for 36 years! (The fact that she resides in Honolulu has no bearing on my revelation of the blog!)

Charlotte was 21 and I was 18 when we first met at the mall. Friendship was to be taken seriously and Charlotte was one of the few friends who passed muster with my parents. Mum liked Charlotte and never forgot her birthday or Christmas and when she died, Dad continued the tradition. Our friendship developed and her family invited me to spend Thanksgiving Day with them. I readily accepted but there was just one slight problem. Dinner was mandatory at my parents’ house so I did what anyone else would have done had they been in my shoes. I had the obligatory dinner at home, including dessert, and then proceeded to house #2. Yikes, they had an equally large spread and I couldn’t be impolite. My stomach is doing flips just thinking about that day, eating two complete turkey dinners. Not quite sure how I did it but I seemed to have made a favourable impression on her family as well.

We ended up being roommates for a while before I moved to the Lone Star state. The arrangement worked like this: Charlotte would cook and I would clean up. She can cook some mean pork chops along with mashed potatoes and the like. There were some bumps in the road as is the case with new friendships but they weren’t bad enough that we couldn’t work things out. Distance has never been an issue with us as one might think. Letters and phone calls kept us going more so than the internet. We prefer the personal touch that phone calls evoke.

Charlotte does have a flaw; originally from Wisconsin, she is a diehard Packers fan which thoroughly clashes with this Cowboy fan. Guess we will have to place a wager for next week’s showdown of the 10-1 teams! We both have a strong dislike for the incumbent president and both of us love to read.

My best ever friend has a big heart and sometimes people take advantage of her. Just remember that karma is a bitch ~ what goes around comes around. I am glad that I gave her the link; she told me that she read all of my entries and is convincing me to write a book. I know I could do a tome on my adventures in the classroom along with characters such as FL, Teacher X and others!

I am really humbled to have such a fantastic friend and love her to pieces!

I enjoyed your post. There is nothing like a good friend.

I didn't share my blog with my family other than my husband and kids until I got the word that I would be mentioned in a USA Today article. Then I shared it with my sister and everyone at school. While I have several close friends who read my blog I have many more who just look at me like I'm a nut or speaking a different language when I bring it up. It really mystifies me...
