Smooth Sailing

The first week of our voyage ended without fanfare. This group of students really wants to learn. Never have I had a year start so well. We did “10 Things I Should Know About You” as a way of me learning about them. Lots of them said they like to do maps. Trust me; they will have lots of opportunities for geography. Students are already QUIZZING me on Texas History content that we won’t be covering until the 2nd quarter. Even though learning to take notes is a long and tedious process, 90% are fully engaged. There are modifications for those that need them and those students are picking it up.

It is so important to set the ‘proper’ tone for your classroom on opening day! Students need to know what your expectations are but the most important thing to me is building relationships with them. What do I mean? Kids need to know that you care ~ show this by respecting them. Establish boundaries but let them know that you will listen to them.

I am actually up to date with lesson plans and grades! Now on to chores ~ if the water has been turned back on. (see post below)

Wishing all teachers, especially those of you who stop by, a very successful voyage.

You are right. You can't demand children's respect unless you demonstrate it yourself. If there's one thing I've learned is you have to model, model, model!:)

What grade you teach?
