Countdown

The hallways will soon echo the strains of "no more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's ugly looks!" Never thought about it before but the "ugly looks" could be taken as the LOOK we give our students, our not so becoming appearance or BOTH ~ yikes!

Seriously, our last day is May 25th. Another academic year draws to a close and I wonder how it disappeared in the blink of an eye. My question is what happens to my 'darlings' during the summer. What are they doing? Are they supervised? Do they get enough to eat? I know that some kids come to our enrichment program (read: summer school) just so they can get food. By the way summer school is a joke ~ the kids know the drill: show up every day, behave and they will pass. Yet our district says however there is no social promotion! Yeah, right and I am the Queen of Sheba. Some of my students will be in sports camps sponsored by the district so at least they have something to do. A lot of my kids are left to fend for themselves since parent(s) have to work during the day. Boredom sets in really quickly. Students have already told me that they don't want school to end ~ for many, school is a safe haven for them. If you have made connections with students you cannot "turn off" caring just because you are on vacation.

Hopefully I will know my teaching assignment for next year by the end of the week. I have been told that I won't have a split schedule ~ that of course is subject to change! Even though this has been an exhausting year, I still think I did do some good. I stayed the course and fought the good fight ~ my battle with breast cancer. I am in remission; I have too many years of teaching left to go!

Vaya con Dios!
