Independence

"Women hold up half the sky"
-Chinese expression

If you met me in real life, you might say I was rather independent.

According to ye olde Webster, independent means: 'not requiring or relying on others.' Why am I that way, you might ask?

Growing up as the only girl with four younger brothers might have something to do with it. You might be inclined to think that as the 'token' female I might have become a pampered, spoiled princess. No, I had to pull my 'weight' and then some ~ Dad believed in "women's liberation" before it became fashionable. I didn't dare ask for help; doing so would have branded me a 'wimp.'

I still find it hard at times to ask for help ~ but the past two years have shown me the "error of my ways." Now I understand that asking for help shows my need for interdependence not dependence.

I left home at 18 and those early lessons came in handy while trekking along on this path called life.
