We are beginning week four of quarter #2. Revolution is underway ~ Texas, that is! Last week passengers learned that wars just don’t start up overnight. Isolated incidents don’t mean much but put them all together and tensions mount. This week we will compare/contrast the Texas Revolution with the American Revolution. The Battle of Gonzales, the 1st of the Texas Revolution, is also called the ‘Lexington of Texas.’ If you don’t remember your US history~1st battle was Lexington and Concord. Texas Rev. only lasted about six months, however! Then it is on to the other battles including the siege at the Alamo. Students want to re-enact the war which might happen. I am thinking of having them do a news broadcast where they interview soldiers from both sides of the action. Did you know that the picture that you see of the Alamo today is NOT how it looked in 1836??
A colleague shared an insight with me that made sense. The Texas Revolution was really a civil war. There was more that we discussed but I don’t want to drag out this post on history. It might put sleep aid companies out of business. Here at the main library there are actual primary sources on Mexico/Texas history locked in the vault. Now I know what I will be doing over the Thanksgiving break: feeding the mind rather than the body.
We, the P.A.L. {Peer Assistance and Leadership} organization, are honoring our veterans this week. It is wonderful to be the adviser for this group of students. They reinforce my belief that children want to do the right thing but need some guidance along the way.
TTFN!!
