Reflections

While prepping my room for the new year, I ran across the evaluations my students filled out back in June. I felt it would be prudent to peruse their commentary after a reasonable length of time.

The whole point of the activity was to give me feedback, positive or negative, so that I could improve my technique. I appreciate the constructive criticism as I have always told my students that I learn from them as I hope they learn from me. The following is a combination of their input as well as my own careful thought.

Strengths:

My teacher always treated me with fairness and respect. About 98% of them felt that way. Remember that some of them had me for 2 or 3 years!
My teacher was knowledgeable about the content. Same percent as above.
The best comments on my strengths: A great listener, sharp ears, respect, a crazy sense of humour, and being able to understand teenagers!

Areas for growth:

Give more timely feedback regarding academic progress. This got pushed to the back burner with 3 preps. No excuses; I have a plan in place for this.
Not letting students push my buttons. This is my #1 bugaboo ~ usually it’s not the students that get under my skin. Generally it is a fellow adult or administrator that riled me up and I unfortunately would dump on the unsuspecting class!

It will be easier to implement my goals this year since the curriculum is not new. I will update you on my progress.

"Sharp ears," I love that!

Rarely it was the student pushing buttons; other adults are more annoying than the kids.

What great feedback!
