Mission Accomplished

As my faithful readers (ok-reader) know, I was invited to join a club that I did not want membership in less than two years ago! However, now that I am a lifetime member, I am not going to stand on the sidelines and be a spectator. Last year I had wanted to participate in the “Susan Komen Race for the Cure” happening here in the Alamo City. As I was still undergoing treatment at the time of the event, I just got some donations for the cause. I made a vow that in 2007, I would ACTIVELY participate.

Today was the day and yours truly was there, clad in my pink shirt and hat along with thousands of other survivors. Have you ever felt alone in a crowd of thousands? The enormity of the event and the emotions churning within was rather overwhelming. A fellow survivor of 14 years, a colleague of mine, just happened to walk up out of the crowd just when I needed her. We embraced and she let me release the tears. She understood without words what was going on inside.

“No one knows what we’re going through unless they have been there,” were her words of comfort to me. I didn’t realize how strongly I wanted to achieve my goal! The excitement, the anticipation really had been building for the past week ~ the realization that I had succeeded really hit home at this point. Now I could go out and walk.

What a beautiful day we had considering we had hail, rain and a tornado watch last night! The air was brisk with low humidity and there was sunshine. My daughter willing got up @ 5:15am to chauffeur me and keep me company. We both felt that we could have walked faster but it is hard to maintain a good clip dodging puddles, strollers, etc. along the way. The bottom line ~ we had fun and had some quality time together.

I am pleased that I was able to set a goal and complete it! Can’t wait for 2008!!
